Preamble
This letter is written from a place of truth, reconciliation, and love. It is not a legal document, but a personal understanding between two people whose shared experiences, struggles, and sacrifices deserve to be recognized honestly.
Dean writes this in the hope that Velda may find her voice again — and that together, they may set the record straight for the sake of peace, healing, and their son, Travis.
Article I — The Truth
- It is acknowledged that Velda endured trauma, including sexual violence and emotional abuse, which profoundly impacted her mental and emotional health.
- It is further acknowledged that Dean stood by her side through this period — providing housing, stability, financial and emotional support, and helping her rebuild her life after addiction and loss.
- Both agree that the narrative told by the system — which led to the termination of Velda’s parental rights — did not reflect the full truth of her progress, her sobriety, or her capacity as a loving mother.
- Both acknowledge that Velda worked hard to stay sober, maintain employment, write music, and create a safe home environment with Dean’s help.
Article II — The Harm
- The forced separation from her child, Travis, caused Velda deep and lasting pain — pain that she carried in silence.
- Dean recognizes how the system’s failure devastated Velda, despite her efforts to comply, heal, and demonstrate her worthiness as a mother.
- The events surrounding her case, including the disbelief of her trauma and the erasure of her progress, constitute emotional and systemic harm that deserves acknowledgment and correction.
Article III — The Request
Dean respectfully asks Velda to consider sharing her truth publicly — in her own words, on her own terms — through social media or video messages. The purpose is not revenge, but restoration:
- To affirm that Dean’s account of the past is truthful.
- To state that Michael committed sexual assault against her.
- To acknowledge that Velda was sober, employed, and working hard with Dean’s support when her son was taken.
- To show that the foster/adoptive family themselves saw her love and capability as a mother.
Such statements can help correct the false narratives that have surrounded her, and reopen the path to justice and healing.
Article IV — The Hope
Dean’s intention is to heal what time and pain have broken. This is not about blame, but about truth, courage, and closure — and about showing Travis, one day, that his mother and father never stopped fighting for him or for what was right.
Dean believes Velda still has a powerful voice, and that the truth — spoken with courage — can restore dignity, hope, and faith in what was lost.
Article V — The Path Forward
Both Dean and Velda are free to choose forgiveness, honesty, and renewal. The future is not written, but it remembers everything. Together, they can bring peace to the story — not by erasing the past, but by reclaiming it.
